Menopause is a life event that the majority of women will experience with varying effects usually between the ages of 45 and 55. Peri-menopause is when you have symptoms before periods have stopped. Menopause is when you have not had a period for 12 months or more.
Menopause and perimenopause can cause a myriad of symptoms including anxiety, mood swings, brain fog, hot flushes and irregular periods.

- 45% of women say they feel their symptoms have had a negative impact on their work
- 47% of women taking a day off work due to menopause symptoms wouldn’t tell their employer the real reason
- 38% of partners say they feel helpless when it comes to supporting their partner
- 28% of partners say they often end up having arguments “because they don’t understand what she is going through”
- Approximately 13 million women in the U.K are either peri or post menopausal, symptoms can last up to 15 years.
- Over 60% of women experience symptoms resulting in behavioural changes
- 1 in 4 women will experience severe debilitating symptoms
- 72% of women in work say they feel unsupported
- 9 out of 10 women say they feel unable to talk to managers at work
- 1 in 5 take time off to deal with menopausal symptoms, 1 in 50 are on long term sick leave.
You are not alone. Talk to your line manager about any concerns you have. Consider employees who are struggling with how to best support their partners/family members – men may need advice and help too, in order to be more supportive.
